If you live on the East Coast, Midwest, or Dirty South you wouldn’t be wrong to assume that industry heavyweights like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and E-40 to name a few are the sole contributors to the fabric of the West Coast culture not knowing that some of the West Coasts most influential artists built their name in the independent market, and over the past two decades Stones Throw Records has been a staple in the West Coast music scene. The Los Angeles based label got its start it 1996 by DJ Peanut Butter Wolf and MC Charles Hicks (Charizma) as an outlet to release their debut album and since then it has grown into one of the independent powerhouses in music today. Over the years Stones Throw Records has quietly been home to some of the biggest names in hip hop from the likes of Grammy nominated singer Aloe Blacc to the late great legend J Dilla and they continue to produce great music that transcends generations. Listed below are a few Stones Throw artist that have been killing the game both on the West Coast and globally:

First lets introduce NxWorries, the dynamic duo of beat-maker Knxwledge and vocalist Anderson .Paak. Both musicians have been having a monstrous year so far, with Knxwledge winning a Grammy Award for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly and Anderson .Paak earning a Grammy nomination, international tour, and solo deal with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath label. As dope as the two are separately when they combine their forces to make music it is a special event that can’t be classified by one genre of music. Check out their debut album Yes Lawd! on Amazon music to get a taste of what this team has cooking.

If you’re a fan of that classic Funk sound then look no further than the combo of Dam-Funk and hip hop legend Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion aka Snoopzilla. While Snoop Dogg needs no introduction the casual hip hop fan may never have heard of Dam-Funk, although he’s been a staple in music since the mid-90’s G-Funk era working with artists such as Mack 10 and MC Eight. Their common love of Funk music caused the two to join forces in 2013 for their self-entitled debut album, reviving the sound making it better than ever in a way the younger generations can still enjoy.

Odds are if you’re a hip hop fan and have never heard of the rapper/producer Madlib you have heard of one and love one of his many alter ego’s whether it be MF Doom, Quasimoto, or Beat Konducta. Madlib has been dropping dope music since 1993 using a blend of hip hop, jazz, funk, soul, and electronic to create a sound that is parallel to none. His unique style has scored him collaboration projects with Jay Dilla, Sade, Talib Kweli, and Freddie Gibbs. With over 20 years in the game Madlib still is bringing that heat with no signs of letting up.
