One of the more unusual cryptozoological mysteries, the Dogman is said to be a strange bipedal hominid with the head of a dog and the body of a man. First reported as far back as 1887, sightings of creatures resembling the description of the Dogman have been pouring out of Michigan and other neighboring states ever since.
One particularly intriguing spate of sightings took place between 1993 and 1994 and involved a young man named Ben who was said to have witnessed one of the creatures on three separate occasions around Grand Haven.
One of the encounters took place while he was walking along a trail in Hofma Nature Preserve with four friends. The group had passed a bridge near the center of the reserve when they heard a sound nearby and witnessed a strange animal.
“I thought it was just a dog walking along, then it stood up on its hind legs,” said Ben. “One of its feet gripped a branch on the tree. Our eyes met and we just stared at each other for about five minutes, then it ran off.”
The second incident took place outside Ben’s family home, he had gone outside to start his mother’s car when a large creature reared up from behind the vehicle. Crying out in terror, Ben observed the beast leaping away and disappearing in to the brush.
The third and final encounter took place in 1994 when Ben and his cousin had been walking towards the beach in the dark. They had spotted a deer in a clearing and had stopped to watch it when a large dog-like creature emerged from the scrub, grabbed the deer in its jaws and carried it off in to the darkness.
As with any cryptozoological creature, evidence for the existence of the Dogman is thin on the ground. Whether or not there really is a large creature stalking the wilds of Michigan it is likely that reports and sightings, much like the legend itself, will endure for many more years to come.
